On February 4, more than 350 participants gathered for the webinar “Harmonization of algae-based LCA – Selection of systems and data providers” to explore the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of algae-based products and systems. The event highlighted the importance of harmonizing LCA in the algae sector, promoting an enriching debate on the challenges and opportunities in sustainability analysis.
Lais Galileu Speranza, GreenCoLab’s Sustainability Group Leader highlighted the relevance of the event: “We were impressed by the large turnout and the active participation of the community. Collaboration between the different players in the algae sector is crucial if we are to make progress in harmonizing LCA and developing more sustainable solutions.”
The webinar was opened by Mariana Carneiro, from Necton and coordinator of the REALM project, followed by a presentation by Maris Stulgis, responsible for blue bioeconomy, algae and marine aquaculture policy at the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries. Maris shared insights into the European Union’s support for the development of the algae sector, reflecting the growing importance of this industry for the blue economy.
Following this introduction, five EU projects working on algae-based value chains presented their approaches and current progress in the field of LCA. These projects have proven to be fundamental to the evolution of the sector, gathering essential data and information to build a more sustainable future for algae.
With a program packed with talks and discussions, the webinar provided a unique space for experts, researchers, and industry professionals to exchange ideas and experiences. The importance of bringing together the algae LCA community to drive sustainability in the sector was one of the main themes addressed, reflecting the ongoing commitment to promoting the blue bioeconomy and the responsible use of marine resources.
