During February, GreenCoLab’s Outreach team, prepared “educational” visits to national schools, namely to Escola EB1 Ria Formosa, in Faro, Escola Secundária da Portela, in Loures, and we ended at Escola Secundária Pinheiro e Rosa, in Faro, with a lecture on algae cultivation. These initiatives seek to offer interactive lessons, to cross science with the knowledge of algae.
The Primary schools were provided with a differentiated educational experience that enabled the children to discover the alternative role of algae. The initiative, which combines science and art, offers children the opportunity to learn about the importance of algae in ecosystems and in our daily lives, through creative painting activities. This activity not only sparks young people’s scientific curiosity but also enhances their awareness of environmental preservation in a fun and engaging way.
At Escola Secundária da Portela, in Loures, knowledge was expanded for the 11th-grade Science and Biology students, from three classes, having “Algae” as the key topic – exploring its cultivation, life cycles, and various species, while also demonstrating its versatility and applications across different industries.
At the Pinheiro e Rosa School, students and teachers immersed themselves in the fascinating universe of microalgae, the subject being the cultivation of microalgae in closed systems. Through engaging explanations and practical demonstrations, the students discovered the importance of microalgae in the production of oxygen, in food, and even in combating climate change. The experience not only cleared up doubts but also inspired new interests and possible future projects in science and technology.
