ABSTRACT
This chapter will provide an overview of the current state and future outlook of the microalgae industry. The introduction outlines the importance of microalgae as a sustainable resource with a wide range of applications in various industries. The chapter will be divided in five sections, where it will discuss the global market of different microalgae-based products. In the section, “microalgae as a sustainable environmental resource” the authors will highlight the advantages of microalgae as a source of energy, food, and pharmaceuticals, as well as its potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The following section will be about “biotechnological applications of microalgae biomass” that will cover the various products derived from microalgae, including foods, feed nutrition, nutraceutical compounds, cosmetics, and biofuels. The section “Market insights: industrial production and compounds of microalgal biomass” will provide an overview of the current market, technological advances, and new product development. Finally, the chapter concludes with a discussion of the “Challenges and future directions” facing the microalgae industry.
