Between 24 and 28 June 2024, the University of Aveiro hosted the “Bioactives in Ulva” training school. This event, developed under the COST Action CA 20106 “Ulva: Tomorrow’s ‘Wheat of the Sea’, a Model for an Innovative Mariculture (SEAWHEAT)”, was co-organized by the University of Aveiro (Portugal), ALGAplus (Portugal), the University of Jena (Germany) and the University of Haifa (Israel).
During the “Bioactives in Ulva” event, Hugo Pereira, General Manager of GreenCoLab, delighted the participants with his presentation on “Scalable biorefinery: pipelines for the production of algae-based bioactive ingredients”. He emphasized the essential role of the biorefinery in advancing biomass and stressed the need to develop innovative pipelines to increase the current market value.
The main objective of the COST Action is to promote a significant transition to a green economy, based on the large-scale production and utilisation of Ulva in Europe and beyond. This initiative aims to foster the development of blue biotechnology industries centred on Ulva.
The action also seeks to integrate Ulva into the traditional European diet, promoting it as a new, sustainable and safe food. Through these initiatives, it is hoped to facilitate the public’s familiarisation with Ulva, encouraging its use as a viable and beneficial alternative for food and other industrial applications.
