The International Animal Health Symposium 2024, organized by CIIMAR, (Aquatic Animal Health) took place on November 12 and 13, in Porto. With the theme “Towards more sustainable livestock farming”, this edition was dedicated to advancing animal health and welfare in aquaculture. Researcher Ana Teresa Gonçalves, from Sparos and GreenCoLab, presented her research “Harnessing the Power of Algae: A multifaceted approach to fish health” during the “Nutrition and Health” session.
Her work, part of the Locality Algae European project, explores how different algae species and biorefinery-derived fractions impact the intestinal mucosa of salmonids – a transformative strategy to promote fish welfare and productivity.
This innovative approach holds great promise for advancing sustainable aquaculture practices while enhancing fish health and resilience.
