Microalgae for bioremediation of effluents from recirculating aquaculture systems and the development of value-added products

AQUA4ALL project aims to close the water and nutrient cycle of RAS systems using a circular economy approach, contributing to and promoting a more sustainable aquaculture sector. The innovation to be implemented is crucial to improve the ecological status of adjacent aquatic resources and reduce waste.

AQUA4ALL project consortium, made up of the companies FLATLANTIC and NECTON, and the non-business entities of the R&I system S2AQUA and GREEN CoLABs, aims to develop a solution for bioremediation of RAS effluent using microalgae production technologies.

This circular economy approach allows for greater efficiency in the treatment of water from RAS systems, which can be reintegrated into fish farming and concomitantly recycle the nutrients in the effluent into microalgae biomass. In order to close the cycle, the microalgae biomass will be further valorized and used in the development of two new products for aquaculture, namely:

i) a sterilized product for the cultivation of live food and marine fish larvae (CleanAlgae)

ii) a water conditioner (AquaDefense) with bactericidal/bacteriostatic properties that benefits the water quality and biological performance of aquatic organisms (e.g. fish larvae and reproducers).
